FAQ

Q: Why do people with intellectual and developmental disabilities need specialized care at the end of life?

A: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) often require specialized care during their end-of-life journeys due to unique physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. They may experience pain, anxiety, or distress differently, requiring tailored comfort measures. I/DD individuals may also have difficulty communicating their needs, making advance care planning crucial. Specialized care, provided by our end-of-life (EOL) doulas, ensures their dignity, comfort, and preferences are respected during this vulnerable time. Our doulas are certified caregivers with expertise in communicating with and caring for people with I/DD.

Q: Is on-site residency at Sara's Sanctuary required to receive end-of-life doula care, or can services be provided in other settings?

A: No, your loved one doesn't have to stay at Sara's Sanctuary to receive services. We understand that each individual has unique preferences and are here to accommodate them. If your loved one prefers to remain at home or in their current facility, our doulas will collaborate with hospice providers to fill gaps in support to the best of our ability, ensuring they receive the care they need in the setting they are most comfortable in.

Q: Are end-of-life doula services the only services you provide at Healing Lights of Love?

A: No, Healing Lights of Love offers a holistic range of services beyond EOL doula care. We understand that caring for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is not just about physical comfort, but also about emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. That's why we provide a variety of indoor and outdoor community spaces designed to facilitate workshops, support groups, nature connections, and spiritual rejuvenation, to utilize during all stages of life.
